APC’s Fuad Laguda Wins Surulere Bye-Election; Succeeds Gbajabiamila as Representative

The political landscape of Surulere witnessed a significant shift as Fuad Laguda, representing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), clinched victory in the Surulere Federal Constituency 1 bye-election. Laguda’s resounding win, announced following the February 3, 2024, election, marks a new chapter in the constituency’s representation.
With a distinguished background as the former APC chairman in Surulere Local Government, Laguda secured an impressive victory, garnering 11,203 votes, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer, Prof Simeon Adebayo. His closest contenders, hailing from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party, trailed far behind with 278 and 240 votes respectively.
Laguda’s ascent to the green chamber comes as a result of former Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila vacating his seat to assume the role of Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu. Gbajabiamila, a seasoned lawmaker who served as Speaker from 2019 to 2023, had previously secured re-election for a sixth consecutive term during the February 25 National Assembly election.
However, Gbajabiamila’s appointment as Chief of Staff prompted his resignation from the House of Representatives in June 2023, paving the way for the Surulere bye-election and ultimately, Laguda’s succession.
As Laguda prepares to assume his new role in the green chamber, the APC retains its stronghold in Surulere, reaffirming its political dominance in the constituency. Laguda’s victory not only underscores the party’s continued support but also signals a seamless transition in representation for the people of Surulere Federal Constituency 1.
With a mandate to uphold the interests of his constituents, Laguda steps into the shoes of his predecessor with a commitment to serve diligently and champion the aspirations of the Surulere community.
