AFCON: Osimhen doubtful to play against South Africa

There are concerns over whether striker Victor Osimhen will be available for the Super Eagles’ Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against South Africa. “The Napoli striker was suffering from abdominal discomfort and did not travel with the team to Bouake for Wednesday’s match,” the team said yesterday, Monday. However, if the 25-year-old is cleared by team doctors, he could join the rest of the squad today, Tuesday.

“Members of the team flew from Abidjan to Bouake on a 10 pm Ivory Coast flight today. However, Osimhen was unable to take part in the expedition due to stomach problems. The team’s medics confirmed that he was under close observation and that members of the medical team remained with him in Abidjan. If cleared by tomorrow morning, he will join the rest of the team by 5 p.m.,” the statement said.

Osimhen has only scored one goal in this tournament, but he is one of the Eagles’ strongest players. The partnership with Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon was one of the reasons why the team reached the 16th AFCON semi-finals.

Nigeria will take on South Africa at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake from 6 pm on Wednesday.
