IG Enforces Traffic Lockdown Ahead of Bye-Elections in 26 States

In anticipation of bye-elections slated for Saturday across 26 states, the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has enacted stringent measures to ensure a smooth electoral process. With vehicular movement banned on roads, waterways, and other transit routes from midnight until 6 pm, citizens in affected areas are urged to plan accordingly.
Exceptions to the restrictions are granted to essential personnel, including Independent National Electoral Commission officials, accredited journalists, and emergency responders such as ambulance services and firefighters. However, security aides to VIPs and politicians are prohibited from accompanying their principals to polling stations and collation centres during the election.
Among the states affected by these measures are Ebonyi, Lagos, Ondo, and Plateau, each hosting crucial bye-elections. Notably, the vacant seat in Lagos’ Surelere 1 Federal Constituency, previously held by former Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, adds significance to the electoral proceedings in the state.
The directive also extends to security outfits, both state-established and privately owned, emphasizing the need for impartiality and the prevention of undue interference or intimidation during the electoral process.
In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, reiterated the importance of these restrictions in safeguarding the integrity of the elections and ensuring equal participation for all citizens. He emphasized the need for political actors and their supporters to adhere to electoral laws, warning that any attempts to disrupt the process would be met with legal consequences.
Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could undermine the electoral process. The Inspector General expressed confidence in the collective efforts to conduct peaceful, transparent, and democratic bye-elections across the nation.
