In a sad moment for Nigeria’s cultural landscape, the nation bids farewell to one of its foremost dramatists, folk singers, and storytellers, Jimi Solanke. The legendary artist, affectionately known as ‘Uncle Jimi’ or ‘Baba Agba’, breathed his last today, Monday, February 5, 2024, at the age of 81, following a brief illness.

Solanke’s journey through the realms of artistry began in the vibrant streets of Ipara Remo, Ogun State, where he was born on July 4, 1942. A custodian of Nigeria’s rich heritage, Solanke mesmerized audiences with his multifaceted talents as a musician, actor, poet, and playwright.

His legacy is deeply intertwined with Nigeria’s cultural narrative, starting with his pivotal role as a pioneer member of the Orisun Theatre Group, founded by the esteemed Wole Soyinka in 1961. Solanke’s artistic prowess flourished on both national and international stages, from captivating performances on Western Nigeria Television in the 1960s to mesmerizing audiences at prestigious festivals in Senegal and Algeria during the 1970s.

Educated at the University of Ibadan, Solanke’s quest for artistic expression led him across continents. In the United States, he established The Africa Review, a platform dedicated to showcasing African culture through dramatic storytelling. His magnetic presence and captivating narratives earned him the title of a “master storyteller,” captivating audiences in Los Angeles and beyond.

Returning to Nigeria in 1986, Solanke continued to enrich the nation’s culture through various mediums. He graced the screens of Nigerian Television Authority, leaving an indelible mark with shows like Storyland, where he seamlessly intertwined storytelling with artistic expression, accompanied by the rhythmic strumming of his guitar.

Solanke’s contributions extended beyond the realm of performance. He lent his talents to the cinematic world, starring in iconic films such as “Kongi’s Harvest” alongside Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka. His captivating portrayal of diverse characters, from Kurumi to the narrator in “Jagunjagun,” showcased his versatility as an actor.

Throughout his illustrious career, Solanke remained a beacon of cultural preservation, ensuring that Nigeria’s rich heritage thrived for generations to come. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, yet his legacy endures through the timeless stories he shared and the lives he touched.
