Minna Residents Stage Protest Over High Costs of Living, Major Roads Blocked

sdbLive | February 5, 2024

The streets of Minna, Niger State, reverberated with the sounds of protest as residents took to the roads to voice their discontent over the escalating cost of living in Nigeria. Early this morning, a diverse group of protesters, including women and youths, converged to express their frustrations, leading to the blocking of major roads in the city.

Chants of protest songs filled the air as demonstrators highlighted the burden of rising food prices and voiced their dissatisfaction with what they perceived as inadequate government intervention to address the situation. Despite the presence of security personnel, including policemen, the protesters remained steadfast in their demand for urgent action from the authorities.

Acknowledging the grievances of the populace, Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba assured the protesters that the government is cognizant of the hardships faced by families during these trying times. He emphasized ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of the petrol subsidy removal and alleviate the financial strain on citizens.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, a Member of the National Assembly representing Yagba Federal Constituency of Kogi State, Leke Abejide, appealed to Nigerians across political and religious divides to exercise patience and support the administration of President Bola Tinubu. Speaking at a grand reception in his honour organized by the Yoruba community in Kano State, Abejide urged citizens to endure the initial challenges and allow the government’s policies to yield positive outcomes.

Drawing an analogy to the pains of childbirth, Abejide expressed confidence in the transformative potential of Tinubu’s administration, urging Nigerians to give it at least two years to manifest its full impact. As the Chairman of the Customs and Excise Committee of the House of Representatives, Abejide emphasized the importance of patience and collective optimism in navigating through current economic challenges.

In a gesture of commitment to his constituency, Abejide pledged to oversee the completion of the Oba Yoruba of Kano’s palace, reaffirming his dedication to serving the Yoruba community in Kano. The conferment of the title of Asiwaju of Yoruba Kano by His Royal Highness, Oba Yoruba of Kano, Dr. Murtala Otisese, underscored Abejide’s exemplary contributions to the welfare of Yorubas residing in Kano.

In response, the Kano State Government reiterated its commitment to inclusive governance, ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach all segments of society.

Amidst the protests and political discourse, the voices of Nigerians echo the urgent need for responsive governance and concerted efforts to alleviate the burden of living costs on ordinary citizens.
