The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has announced that a preliminary report on the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Herbert Wigwe, Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, and several other prominent Nigerians in California, USA, is expected within four weeks.

According to Michael Graham, a Board Member at the NTSB, the preliminary report will offer initial insights into the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident. The crash, which occurred at a border town between California and Nevada, resulted in the demise of all six occupants, including Wigwe, his wife Doreen, their son Chizi, and Abimola Ogunbanjo, former Group Chairman of the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

Graham stated that the investigation process would continue even after the preliminary report, with the full investigation expected to last between 12 to 24 months before the final report is issued. He emphasized that any additional information regarding the investigation would be provided by the NTSB headquarters in Washington DC.

Earlier investigations at the scene involved aerial drone mapping and documentation of the wreckage. The US agency revealed that the wreckage would be relocated to a secure facility for further analysis.

Additionally, details from flight track data indicated that the helicopter impacted the terrain at a ‘nose-low and right-bank angle.’ Components recovered from the wreckage include three main rotor blades, the aircraft engine, tail rotor, landing gear, and skids.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has expressed its collaboration with the NTSB in the ongoing investigation. The Director-General of NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh, extended condolences to the affected families, acknowledging the significant loss to Nigeria.

Wigwe’s tragic passing has left a void not only in his family but also in the financial sector, where he served as a prominent leader. The swift appointment of Ms. Bolaji Agbede as the Acting Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc aims to ensure continuity in the institution’s operations.

In the wake of the tragedy, dignitaries and associates have paid their respects to Wigwe’s family, underscoring his impactful contributions to society. The mourning period declared by his kinsmen in Isiokpo, Rivers State, reflects the profound loss experienced by the community.
